Comparing two drafts without losing context
Prepare comparable files
Export both revisions as UTF-8 text. Keep chapter headings and paragraph order consistent. A word processor file must first be exported as TXT; changing its extension does not convert it.
Read the line report
For “The door is blue.” changed to “The door is green.”, the report removes the first line and adds the second. It compares complete lines, not the intent behind the edit. A paragraph that moves can appear as a deletion and an addition.
Keep the comparison manageable
Each left line is compared with right-side lines in an exact algorithm. Two 2,000-line drafts reach the four-million-pair limit. Compare chapters separately for larger manuscripts. A file with very long lines may still fit this bound but remain hard to review.
Download an audit copy
Save comparison.txt with your revision notes. “+” and “−” prefixes identify additions and removals; unchanged lines keep a blank prefix. The preview is capped, but the downloaded report includes all processed lines. The report is not a patch file and should not be applied as one.
